LIFE OrnamentalIAS -Prevention and management of adverse impact of ornamental invasive alien plant species on endangered habitat types and species of EU importance

The project addresses five areas:

The main goal of the project is to limit the introduction and spread of ornamental invasive alien plants from urban areas into nature and to preserve and improve the endangered habitat types and species of EU importance.

Main project activities

Limiting the spread of ornamental invasive alien plants from urban areas into natural habitats.

  • Preparing lists of invasive and potentially invasive ornamental plants.
  • Identifying alternative native and non-invasive ornamental plants.

Upgrading and establishing an Early Warning and Rapid Response (EWRR) system for water management and agriculture.

Improving and preserving endagered habitat types and species habitats of EU importance on 1600 ha of selected Natura 2000 areas in Slovenia and Croatia, Limiting the introduction and spread of invasive alien plants into nature through adapted garden waste management.

Researching and developing alternative uses for invasive alien plant residues within a circular economy.

Communication activities on ornamental invasive alien plants.

Ensuring the sustainability, transferability, and upgrade of project results for further use and development in other sectors and areas.

International cooperation and knowledge exchange between Slovenia and Croatia.

Project Areas

Activities will be carried out in 13 project areas, mostly located within Natura 2000 sites.
